Categories vs. Tags - Best SEO Practices for Sorting Your Content
You might not know the meaning of WordPress categories and tags. This will allow you to correctly use them.
This article will discuss the differences between categories and tags for organizing your content. This article will also explain how they affect SEO rankings.
What's the difference between categories and tags?
You can group your posts by using categories. These are your main topics, or the table that contains all your posts on your WordPress website. Because categories are hierarchical, you can also create subcategories.
Tags can be used to describe specific details within your posts. These are your website's index keywords. These tags can be used to micro-categorize content. You can use tags hierarchically.
This blog post is one example. It's located in the category "Beginners Guide". You can view all posts by going to Blog>> Beginners Guide from the navigation menu.
This article contains the following tags. Custom taxonomy (categories and Tags), SEO best practices, sorting of content, tags, and best practices.
These tags will not be visible anywhere in the article. These tags do help users find the article by using relevant searches on our blog.
The main difference between tags and categories is that WordPress posts must be filed in a particular category. They don't have to be tagged.
WordPress will assign your post the default category if it doesn't have one. This is called "Uncategorized". However, you can often rename the "uncategorized” Category to something like "Other" or "Miscellaneous span>
You can only have categories and tags in WordPress for blog posts. A plugin can be used to add tags or categories to WordPress pages.
How can you add tags or categories to WordPress?
WordPress lets you add tags and categories to edit or create a new blog post. These settings can be found on the right sidebar under the "Document” tab.
You can also visit Posts >> Category or Posts >>Tags to add tags and categories.
More information on adding tags and categories can be found in our explanations under "What is a category?" What is Tag?
How many WordPress categories should you have?
There are no minimum number of categories that you should have. To correctly categorize posts, most people will require between 5-10 categories. This will make it easier for visitors to find your site.
You can group multiple posts by using categories. Tags and subcategories can be used to break down your posts into smaller groups.
If you're just starting a blog, don't worry. There are 3 to 5 categories you can choose from, and you can add more as your blog grows.
Should I use subcategories or ?
Subcategories do not necessarily need to be used. WPBeginner is one example of a large blog that doesn't allow subcategories. Subcategories are useful if you have large categories that contain many posts.
For example, you might have a category called "Recipes", which contains a growing variety of gluten-free recipes.
To make it easier for readers, these posts can be placed within their own subcategory. For recipes, create a new category called Gluten-Free and move the posts there.
Use Categories In The URLs Of Your Posts
To use the Category name as permalinks (post URLs), you can configure settings >> Permalinks
Your first post will be titled
The URL of the post will change after it is moved to a children category.
WordPress will usually redirect the URL to the new URL. Verify that your links work. You can change the URL to redirect it from the old URL.
You can also save the post to your parent category and then assign it to your child category. This has its downsides.
The URL of Neverlosethem contains categories. We recommend users to use a shorter URL structure.
This will enable you to arrange content with maximum flexibility without worrying about redirects.
We use the Post name URL structure for all new websites that we have built. SEO has been around since over 10 years. SEO is based on a traditional URL structure. Search engine optimization is not recommended to change URL structures. Neverlosethem has been our choice.
Can I assign one post to multiple categories?
WordPress allows you place a post within multiple categories. Multiple parent categories can be used or you can have one parent category with a subcategory.
Your SEO will not be able to benefit from multiple categories. You should only assign one category to posts if it makes sense for your visitors.
Your post might be in more than one category. Duplicate content can lead to SEO problems.
Avoid placing one post in multiple categories. Each post should belong in one category.
Is there a limit to how many tags a post can contain?
WordPress does not limit the number tags you can add to a post. You can add up to 1,000 tags to a post!
We don't recommend it.
Tags can be used to link posts with similar content together. Tags can be thought of as an index section in a book. You can think of each tag as a keyword within an index.
Tags can be used to search your website. Some plugins show related posts and allow users to search for them using tags.
We recommend you limit your posts down to 10 tags per post
